Physicochemical properties: white or off white amorphous powder. Almost odorless and tasteless. It is a natural polysaccharide, taken from pig or bovine intestinal mucus or bovine lung. It is hygroscopic. It is easily soluble in water (200mg in 5ml water), soluble in saline solution, and almost insoluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, chloroform and benzene.
