Physicochemical properties: white to light yellow crystal or powder. Bleomycin contains several components with similar properties (a mixture of bleomycin sulfate salts) and is a weak alkaline substance. It is easily soluble in water and methanol, slightly soluble in ethanol, and almost insoluble in acetone, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and ether.
Purpose: biochemical research. Binding to DNA, inhibiting DNA synthesis and causing DNA division requires binding of oxygen and metal ions (such as copper or iron) to cut DNA. Cleaved RNA is highly selective, regulates and induces apoptosis
