Glutamine Gln is a non essential amino acid. Many tissues of the body contain Gln synthase, which can synthesize Gln. However, under the emergency and high decomposition conditions such as intense exercise, trauma, infection, etc., the body's demand for Gln greatly exceeds the body's ability to synthesize Gln. The insufficient amount of Gln synthesized by the body leads to the reduction of protein synthesis and atrophy of small intestinal mucosa. Therefore, Gln is called conditionally essential amino acid.
