Catechin is the general name of polyhydroxyflavane-3-phenol, but sometimes it refers to (+) catechin. It is widely distributed in the plant kingdom, and is abundant in the bark of Acacia catechu and gambir together with tannins. The effect of tannin is very weak, but it is easy to form tannin by heating and acid treatment. Positions 2 and 3 have non corresponding isomers due to the presence of irregular carbon atoms.
There are two chiral (see chiral) carbon atoms in the molecule of catechin, so there are four stereoisomers: (+) - catechin, (-) - catechin, (+) - epicatechin, (-) - epicatechin.
