Physicochemical properties: orange red to brown powder. Dissolved in water and ethanol, it is orange yellow with green fluorescence. In case of concentrated sulfuric acid, it will show green fluorescence without color band and become orange yellow after dilution. The aqueous solution is added with sodium hydroxide to produce yellow precipitate. 1% solution, pH 6.5, pH 8.4-10.4, no fluorescence. It can be embedded between two adjacent base pairs to loosen part of the double helix DNA, and the distance between the two base pairs is doubled. During such DNA replication, the DNA strand will be added or deleted by one base, resulting in frameshift mutation
Purpose: biochemical research. Tumor cells and bacteria, nucleic acid stains and mutagens for frameshift mutations. Fluorescent indicator. Acridine orange is a fluorescent pigment, and the excitation filter wavelength of acridine orange is 488nm. The blocking filter has a wavelength of 515nm. Acridine orange has different binding amounts to DNA and RNA in cells and can emit fluorescence of different colors (i.e., coloration specificity)
